Why 48V Batteries Charge to 54.6V
A “48V” lithium e-bike battery is built from 13 cells wired in series, and each of those cells reaches a maximum safe charge of 4.2V. Do the maths — 13 × 4.2V — and you get 54.6V, which is the actual voltage the battery sits at once it’s genuinely full. “48V” is just the pack’s nominal (average riding) voltage, not its charge target, which is why the charger needs to output 54.6V rather than 48V.
This matters because a charger that doesn’t match your battery’s real full-charge voltage can cause problems either way: an undersized charger won’t fully charge a 48V battery and will leave you short on range, while an oversized charger — such as a 58.8V unit meant for 52V packs — risks pushing the pack’s battery management system into overvoltage protection or generating excess heat. Getting this number right is a genuine safety matter, not just a technicality.
Compatibility
This charger suits e-bikes and cargo bikes running a 48V (13S) lithium battery system with a matching connector, including many Vinxs electric bike configurations we sell and service. It is not interchangeable with 52V (14S) systems, which charge to 58.8V and need our separate SANS 58.8V 5A charger instead. The two chargers also use differently shaped output connectors, so a straight swap between them isn’t possible even if the voltage happened to match.
Because connector shapes vary between brands and even between battery revisions, we always recommend checking your battery’s existing charger or connector before ordering — send us a photo and we’ll confirm the fit.
Charging Recommendations
Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface indoors, away from direct sun and rain — the charger’s own label specifically warns it’s for indoor use only. Avoid leaving any lithium battery on charge unattended for extended periods, and let the charger cool between back-to-back charges if you’re charging multiple batteries in a workshop setting. The red indicator means charging is in progress; once it switches to green, the battery is either full or the charger has been disconnected — stop charging shortly after the light turns green rather than leaving it connected indefinitely.
Workshop Tips
If your bike came with a 48V battery but you’ve lost track of which charger belongs to it, don’t guess by the plug shape alone — two chargers can share a similar-looking connector while outputting completely different voltages. The voltage is always printed on the charger’s label; check it against your battery’s spec before plugging in. If you’re at all unsure, bring both in and we’ll check them for you.
